Seven Up: A Middle East Survey

on

I’m pursuing a few things in the real world that finds me doing research in a number of areas. One item in the research pile is the opinions of US citizens  on a number of select countries . One set ,as one would imagine ,focuses on the Middle East region.

Bahrain

Israel

Iran

Jordan

Lebanon

Saudi Arabia

Qatar

On an ally/enemy good for us/bad for us (USA) scale how would you rate the above countries?

Not to cause confusion there are a number of acceptable ways to make your choices. Straight forward 1 to 7 rating encompassing the listed parameters.

You could also break the parameters into two sets. For example you might view Israel as #1 ally but not necessarily believe they rate #1 as far as being good for us.

It is really a matter of how much effort you want to put forth. I greatly appreciate any input. Thank you.

Alfie, admittedly I’m a dumbass. My response to you on my blog assumed your wanted a rating on a 1 to 7 scale, not an ordered list of 1 to 7. So here goes my two cents again in the manner you were intending (from best ally to worst):

    Israel
    Jordan
    Saudi Arabia
    Iran
For Qatar, Bahrain and Lebanon, I’m not up to speed enough to have even a slightly educated opinion.

I think Israel’s belligerence puts us in a slightly sticky place as their BFF but I also believe their attitude toward democracy puts them at the head of the pack in terms of countries we should support and who support us.

I am sorely tempted to put Saudi Arabia below Iran but reality dictates we NEED them more than Iran. Get us energy independence and I swap SA and Iran in a heartbeat. Despite the Ayatollah, I’m pretty sure Iran is actually more progressive than SA and a damn better place for women to live.

    In order, best to worst:

    Israel
I don’t think I really need to go into this obvious one.

    Saudi Arabia
Both useful and a staunch ally, at least as long as the House of Saud maintains control

    Qatar
A growing force in MENA and one that is a good foil to use to maintain SA’s cooperation.

    Jordan
Largely useless and insular, yet they cause few problems and provide a semi-neutral hand in diplomacy, and they can, at need, be used as an excuse, given their decades-old mistreatment of “Palestinian Refugees.”

    Bahrain
Over and done with with little input left in the world. They’ve been shunted into irrelevance by Dubai.

    Lebanon
An enemy and a constant, low-grade irritant for the US.

    Iran
Iblis’ bastard progeny and a permanent enemy of the West, especially America, until such time as we eradicate them. However, that being said, the fact that they Shiites makes them an equally permanent enemy to our mostly Sunni allies so their very existence strengthens the cooperation of the other nations with us.
