The “New” way of looking at government

Public health is an area that fascinates me. From the past to the present and into the future I think this topic is often misunderstood, many times mishandled and sometimes ignored completely. It is an area though in which the combination of public and private efforts have effected the common good. Sadly it is also an area where some of our failings are really coming to terrible fruition.

I don’t like ObamaCare…

I think I should be clear on that. There are parts of it that are pretty good ideas and those parts should have flown solo on their merits. There are parts of the ACA that are absolute crazy governmental overreach, they would’ve been squashed but instead survive secondary to the baby and bath water scenario. Furthermore there are parts that are so jumbled that whether they are good or bad or whether they will even work is still yet to be seen. There are parts of the ACA that speaks to the better aspect of public health. I fear though that there is far more that exists within the realm of the ham-fisted bureaucracy that is way out of touch with reality.

Government has its uses though…

I am one that opposes the government striving for its independence from the People and please don’t be one of the ignorants that think the leviathan isn’t trying to do so. That said there is one area of controversial governance that I kind of support. Behavioral science is one of the new rages among the policy making set yet it isn’t new contrary to the Nudge crowds fawning over themselves. I think this area is where governments lose their way and connections are lost. This is unacceptable in a democracy. Today the nudging is more like shoving which is just short of dragging people and that leads to revolution. Because of this I think we need to dial it back a few notches and get reengaged as a society. I’ll have a bit more on this after this next part.

The Privates are guilty too.

The NGO’s and charities are as guilty as government in the turn of events that has tarnished the public health initiatives that serve the common interest. Government is in my mind rightly held to a higher standard but I for one will not let the other folks off the hook. So many entities have lost sight of what they’re really supposed to be about. Most of them are guilty of the same trap government has fallen into. They think they as entities are more important than the cause they stand for. Whether its Easter Seals or the Komen Foundation (especially them !) or any number of folks one can readily see where the real reason they exist is for themselves NOT the sick kids or the boobies and the women attached thereof. Another example is the AMA and AAP (American Medical Association & American Academy of Pediatrics respectively) These two entities have gone so far down a path of policy pursuing agenda pounding they have perverted that which they used to and should stand for. The AAP positions & “research” on gun control and the HPV vaccine are two great examples of why I have zero respect for these folks. The privates need to get their focus back and reintegrate back into society instead of holding the belief they are somehow above it.

The wrap up and tie-in.

From earlier:

I think these are fairly self-evident truths and damn good advice for the United States of America. In support of this article I will be opening up an image based series in which I will share some public health orientated PSA type stuff which I think speaks to how with true commitment,a little caring nudge and a harkening back to the past may very well be exactly what the doctor ordered.
