Keeping in line with the “see it -call it” rule I offer the following.
It is not religious intolerance or specifically Islamophobia to speak out against “honor killings” Most recently the buzz has been about Du’a Aswad. This 17 year old girl was beaten and stoned in front of many people for “dishonoring” her family and faith. I dress it up there because in truth she had a relationship with a Sunni boy and didn’t come home one night. This absence from home was taken to mean pre-marital sex ! The killing was captured on video by bystanders who looked on or actively participated and has been seen on the net and blogs etc. This post isn’t specifically about that story .
The blogosphere quickly shouted from the roof tops that this was an example of Islamofacism. In fact the girl was not a Muslim or follower of Islam. There are reports that she converted to be with her lover but she was Yazidi. This is an entirely different faith and it’s followers are who killed her.The sickening occurrence was in Iraq and worthy of being a part of a larger lesson. My point here is we can’t forfeit our common sense in this new world of terror etc. We have to look, speak and act accordingly.
I would like to say this too. If you are a Muslim you shouldn’t be aglow with vindication. There are numerous reports of “honor killings” throughout the Muslim world and some very suspect happenings seeping into the West.
“The incidence of honour killings of women has risen astronomically throughout the Islamic world with the rise of fundamentalism and its male-centered morality that often skews the sense of what is decent, compassionate and just.”
One can scan the web of credible news entities and find proof of this. There is also no lack of real stories in the form of narratives, biographies and official agency reports. As for in the West.
“Half a world away in France, Muslim women of marriageable age stand to suffer a similar fate upon being discovered to have engaged in premarital sex. Many are therefore demanding doctors perform hymenoplasties on them, a surgical procedure to restore hymens, lest they perish at the hands of their husbands, fathers or brothers.”
What world is this ? In mentioning France I would add the story of Samira Bellil
See it where it is, call it what it is. It is owed to many that the truth be told.
All block quotes for this post are from here. A good article that looks at the attack is here. The Wiki outline of the event with links to the aftermath (4 arrests,23 Yizids killed in reprisal etc) here.
